Pope Francis, RIP

The Catholic Parish of Our Lady Star of the Sea extends an invitation to our Churches Together brothers and sisters to pray for the repose of the soul of Pope Francis at St Edward’s Church, Park Avenue, Whitley Bay. St Edward’s will be open from 9.00am on Friday, 25 April, for anyone to come in and spend time in prayer and reflection and light a candle in thanksgiving for the ministry of Pope Francis.

Food Bank Plea

The majority of us at St Mary's are fortunate in that we don't have to go without food.

Sadly the Bay Food Bank are very short on supplies with demand outstripping what is available. Any donations of dried or tinned food and toiletries would be appreciated please. If you can put them in the food bank box under the table in the lobby.

Eco Church – Film showing

The environmental documentary 2040, will be shown in church, on Saturday 3rd May @ 10am. Please join us for the showing of this uplifting and informative film. It will be followed by a soup lunch and the opportunity to chat about environmental issues. A sign-up sheet, for catering numbers, is on the table in the vestibule.

In ‘2040’ the director embarks on a journey to explore what the future could look like by 2040 if we simply embraced the best solutions already available to us to improve our planet. The director blends traditional documentary with dramatized sequences, structured as a visual letter to his four-year-old daughter, and how these solutions could regenerate the world for future generations.

Christian Aid Event. 17th May 2025

Next month, Christian Aid Week, will highlight and raise funds for those battling with poverty, injustice, and the effects of the climate crisis. This year the heatwaves and draughts in Guatemala are featured, along with the difficulties faced by of the indigenous farmers.

At St. Mary’s, we will be hosting our annual fundraising event on Saturday 17th May, for Christian Aid. We are fortunate to be able to enjoy our gardens, seaside and countryside and this year we would like to incorporate these themes into our fundraising event.

As well as our traditional soup lunch, quiz, and baked goods stall, we will have a plant stall and an ‘Outdoors’ themed stall (garden/camping/sports equipment, outdoor toys, outdoor clothing etc.) Please, nothing too big and unmanageable and donors to take away any unsold items.

Now is the time, to plant seeds and nurture plants for the Plant Stall, sort outdoor articles for the Outdoor Stall and browse favourite recipes for the Baked Good Stall. All to be brought to church in the days running up to the event.

Thank you in anticipation of contributions.

Justice and Peace team.

Note From Northumbria Police

The police have advised us of increased reports of people trying doors in the area recently. We are fortunate to be in a very safe area, but please take sensible precautions and lock up at night and when out.

Church Windows Update

We’ve had a good start to fund raising for the new windows. A big thank you to those who have donated so far.

No grant news yet, but that always takes time.

In the mean time, if you do feel you can contribute, then the details below tell you how, or feel free to speak to one of the staff, wardens or David Tompkins.

We’re also delighted to say that planning has started for a couple of fund raising events - more information to follow in due course.

We’ve had a timely reminder this week of the fragility of our windows, when one was broken by a misplaced ball (the guilty party has been in contact!).

And, unfortunately, it seems that we will have to pay the full VAT rate.

You can contribute by:

- cheque payable to "St Mary's Monkseaton" or cash (envelopes in church, with Gift Aid slips, into the wall-safe)

- by bank transfer to: Sort Code: 403418, Account: 04502086 but please also email office@stmarysmonkseaton.org.uk if you are able to Gift Aid your donation
